Healthy Eating
A healthy diet can enhance your health, energize you, help you keep strong, fit and active, and allow you to fight viruses more effectively. It also plays a part in lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other health problems.
Healthy eating is not just about what you take in; it is about how and how much you eat; in relation to your lifestyle. Take in these pointers and learn how to eat smart:
Chew your food well
Mastication begins in the mouth. Food that is chewed properly is broken into smaller pieces. This enables it to mix well with your saliva. Better digestion means better absorption of nutrients by your body. If anything else, chewing slowly also lets you enjoy the flavors of your chow, so savor every bite.
Keep stress at bay
Try not to eat while you are at work, driving or walking as distractions tend to interfere with digestion. Anxieties and stress can also affect appetite. If you feel upset, take a few deep breaths before taking your meal, or make your environment more conducive to good digestion by playing some soothing music, for example.
What is your body saying?
Be attentive to your body. Quit bingeing when you feel full or ill. As there is usually a time lapse between your brain's knowing and communicating to your mind that your body already has sufficient fuel to last the next 6 to 8 hours, take your time to eat also allows you to better gauge your intake.
Eat only what your body needs, and not more than what you think you require.
Eat early, eat often
Adopt a pyramid eating pattern: have a hearty breakfast to kick-start your metabolism, a good lunch to keep your body going, and a light dinner to sustain yourself through the evening. Also go for small amounts throughout the day rather than a couple of large servings. It is easier for your body to handle a little bit at a time than a lot all at once.
